A week to remember!!

How did I manage to stay away from the intranet and my book writing for seven whole days?  It actually was easier than expected. The trick was to keep myself so busy that I wouldn’t have time to even think about anything else except for enjoying quality time with my daughter.  In the end we made lots of memories that will last a lifetime.

Our vacation started with a little trip to distract me from my writing, but I can admit now that I had a slight alterative
motive.  I needed to travel far away and seek out some help from a little friend of mine.  If I was clever enough my daughter wouldn’t even notice that I was making this a business trip.  The challenge was on to devote myself to family time while acquiring the one thing that I needed to transform my manuscript.

Monday was a twenty four hour whirlwind of excitement.  We literally went non stop around the clock.  The only rest we managed to acquire was on the plane, which wasn’t as relaxing as one would think.  As soon
as we were settled into the hotel we slipped on our sunglasses and started taking in the sights.  With all the glamour around us we felt like we were in the movies.  We even managed to get some autographs of some very famous stars!

Day two of our trip was very intense.  This was the day that I planned on hunting down my friend. I was so excited that we were up and moving with only five hours of sleep.  After studying my map we managed
to find her hanging out in her beautiful garden. It felt like we were in another world as chatted, and the hour and a half wait to meet her was well worth every minute.  With my first goal completed we could now spend some time trying to relax.

The third day was spent on a safari
.  We donned our cameras and hopped aboard a chauffeured coach that took us up close to see the lions, giraffes, rhinos and crocodiles.  It was amazing to see so many creatures within arms reach.

Thursday was absolutely magical.  We were treated like royalty and the child inside of me escaped as I realized that dreams really do come true.  This was the place where my friend said I could find what I needed, and I was all ears as we scoped out the atmosphere.  It was a full day of sight seeing and shopping, and yes we got a little goofy as well.

Have you figured out where we went on vacation to yet? I left a clue in each of the paragraphs above.  The red letters spell out…. Disney World!!  We visited Hollywood Studios, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom.  Oh, and that little help that I needed from my friend…. I managed to get it after all.  Now I can have it with me whenever my writing needs a little magic!

As it turns out I managed to keep this vacation strictly personal.  And while Tinker Bell did offer me some of her pixie dust to work magic on my writing, I will have to refrain from using it in order to keep my book authentic.
Now that we have returned from never land it is back to business as usual.  Tuesday I will be posting a special blog on the Alumni of the River's End Writing Academy.

I hope you all will join me and my fellow writers as we present our very first public reading at the River’s End Bookstore @ 6:30 pm.  The night will be entitled "An Evening  with Writers from The River's End: Readings from Neighbors You Never Knew."  Programs will be handed out prior to the evenings event that will include author bio’s and a synopsis of the work being read. Below is the link to the bookstore for more information:   http://www.riversendbookstore.com/event/rivers-end-reading

A New Independence

7/2/2011

Americans all over the world are getting ready to celebrate their independance this coming 4th of July weekend. Typically it is spent with friends and family having cookouts, watching parades, and enjoying the little ones as they beem with excitment twirling sparklers around in the dark.

The thought of spending quality time with loved ones intriqued me, and made me want to have that more more than just a weekend.  After debating on the best way to achieve this, I decided to celebrate my independence in a different way.  For one full week I will become "screen free" in an effort to promote more family time.  I am officially proclaiming my independence from the intranet!!

My first reaction to this thought was gut wrenching.  With a goal to reach, how will I ever accomplish my revivions if I take a week off?  I allowed my conscience to weigh back and forth the pros and cons before coming to the realization that if I step back for a few days, my mind will be able to return with clearer thinking and my eyes will be more astute to tracking changings that are needed.  So I tell myself that I will be doing my book a favor by taking a few days off.

On Monday July 4th, the official start of the holiday, I will begin my journey of becoming "unplugged."  My computer will be shut down and I will break out the sunscreen as I embark on a few days filled with family fun.  I look forward to exclusive bonding time and lots of laughs this coming week.  When I conclude my independence next week, I will happily turn my computer back on so that I can blog all about the experience.  Will I be able to spend seven days away from my screen?  Tune in next week to find out!!

I have the privilege of being able to shape the minds and lives of children who are battling disabilities.  It can be very trying at times, but more often than not it is very rewarding.  As a mother of a child with a disability, I know the struggles that they go through on a daily basis.  This allows me to have a little more compassion for the people that I work with.
