It has been said that writing a book is like birthing a child. It takes time, patience, and alot of love. You become emotionally attached and live and breath your words on the page. This is how I spent my last six years.

Now I am proud to announce that my novel has been born. Breaking the Silence is now available for sale! You can pick up a copy on Amazon.Com or download an eBook for your Kindle. Links to both places are on the Breaking the Silence navigation tab to your left.

A blog tour is currently being planned as I make my way around the web. There will be free book giveaways and reviews to look forward to. Have a website and would like to take part? Email me at WindingRoadBook@aol.com and I will put you on the list of participants. If you don't have a site, you can always post your review on Amazon.Com after you read the

Is self publishing for you?

For those of you who have been reading my blog and saw that I was invited to speak at the Delta Lake Writer's Gathering, you may have asked yourself just what is she going to talk about? Well as luck may have it today I am going to share part of my presentation: Is self publishing for you?

Let me first start off by saying that the route to being published is a very personal one. Many have entertained the idea of self pubishing, yet knew very little as to go about it. Others only want an agent/publisher. Only you can decide which option would work best for you and your work. Either way, do your homework!

Picture
Just like each agent and publishing house are different, so are your choices for self publishing. There are agents who will charge you a reading fee (be wary!) and there are self publishing houses that will publish your book for you if you pay them upfront (typically in the neighborhood of tens of thousands of dollars!!) If you take the time to research, you will find respectable agents, publishing houses, and self publishing options that can get your work until print.

When I decided to publish Sometimes The Wind Blows Sideways: Our Lives with a Special Needs Child
I went with Amazon.Com's publishing house, CreateSpace. It is geared towards the authors themselves and was extremely easy to use. Did you know that author Amanda Hocking used CreateSpace for several of her books and sold millions before she was swept up by a big publishing house? Self publishing is a great way to start building a platform and test the waters with niche writing.

As with anything in this world, there are pro's and con's to self publishing. Here is a quick glance at some of the things you will need to consider:

              Self Publishing

*You are in control of pricing, royalties and copyrights if self published

*Books can be sold at retailers, online and to libraries

*You can publish your book, your way

*Quicker print time
                  Agent/Publisher

*Your royalties and rights  will  depend on your contract

*Books can be sold at retailers, online and to libraries

*Agents may want to alter your manuscript

*Book could take over a year to hit the shelves

As I sit upon the serenity of a calm lake, fresh air, and warm people my mind can't help but to relax. The stress of day to day life is replaced with a euphoria of peace. It is every writer's paradise.

With yesterday's presentation behind me today I get to sit and become the student. Time will be spent this afternoon learning the snowflake method of writing, listening in to agent Diana Flegal as she Skypes to the conference, and hearing from author Dave Fessenden, Elaine W. Miller, and Hope Martson. I am eager to fill my notebook with their knowledge.

Hope has just released her 35th Sackets Harbor Powder Monkey, the War of 1812 this past week on Kindle. Her hard copy will be availble very shortly. This book is a little close to my heart because I have been helping Hope get her files ready for publication.

Once the classs conclude I will be off once again to wander the grounds and find a small niche in mother nature where I will sit down and begin utalizing the new mehtods in my own work. A big thank you to Lisa Buske for allowing me to steal this breathtaking photo from her. Her technology was being a little more use friendly than mine was.

Are you a novice or an expert? Does writing seep through your veins or do you enjoy just casual journaling? Either way a writer's gathering is a great way to meet new friends, pick up some new techniques, and reflect on your own writing.

The Upstate New York Christian Writers Third Annual CHRISTIAN WRITERS’ GATHERING is being held at the Delta Lake Bible Conference Center in Rome, New York. On July 5th & 6th writers, poets, and editors will unite to share information in a relaxed environment. This event is open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend.

What will you learn while you are there?
This year a varity of seminars are being offered to fit the needs of the many different levels of writers that are amongst us. The kick off happens at 1:30 on Thursday July 5th where you can take in the keynote address (delivered by John Stumbo). Later in the day you will discover the world of self publishing (given by yours truly) and after that stay and learn about the benefits of blogging (hosted by Diane Estrella). At the end there will be a panel discussion by all of the presenters.

On Friday July 6th The Snowflake Method of Writing will be introduced and then DAVE FESSENDEN
will share concepts from his book Writing the Christian Nonfiction Book: Concept to Contract. Cheryl Potts will begin the second session of the day by talking about articles that sell and then author Hope Martson (who is getting ready to debut her 35th book very soon) will conclude the day with a seminar on writing nonfiction for children.

How can you attend?
TO REGISTER for the Christian Writers’ Gathering, mail a check for $40 with your name, address, phone number and email, by June 28 to: Debbie Tuthill, 4585 County Hwy. 14, Treadwell, NY 13846

Questions? Email Debbie at dtuthill@stny.rr.com, or call her at 607-829-8531

(The $40 fee covers only the cost of the seminars. To register for lodging and meals, contact the Delta Lake Bible Conference Center at www.deltalake.org.)

I have the privilege of being able to shape the minds and lives of children who are battling disabilities.  It can be very trying at times, but more often than not it is very rewarding.  As a mother of a child with a disability, I know the struggles that they go through on a daily basis.  This allows me to have a little more compassion for the people that I work with.
