Kids and adults alike love going to the library to pick out a book, but this year a special project will be bringing the books directly to the community. Sponsored by the Oswego City School Dictrict, SUNY Oswego and the Oswego YMCA, the Oswego Bookmobile will be visiting sites throughout Oswego County for eight weeks this summer. Their vision was to "Drive Books Home", and that is just what they are doing. They are offering the public read alouds, literacy activities, dogs that will listen to you read, and of course free books!
I had the special opportunity to be one of the first people on the bookmobile when it visited my school in June. The look on the children's faces was pricesless as they stepped inside. There were books of every genre and reading level within reach, complete with reading areas where everyone is welcomed to sit down and relax. The kids all wanted to know when the bookmobile would be coming to them. So they were told to listen to the music that would be playing. As it rolls down the street this machine sings a tune announcing it's arrival, much like the ice cream truck did years ago.
According to their website http://www.oswegobookmobile.org the bookmobile will deliver free books once a week to twelve different sites in the City of Oswego, Scriba and Oswego Town. The schedule can also be found at the Oswego YMCA's website. If you are a fan of facebook you can "like" them by searching for Oswego Bookmobile.
My daughter can't wait to visit this week and we have already decided that it would be nice to donate some of her books so that others may enjoy them. From Pre-K to adult, this bookmobile offers something for everyone. I hope that many of you will take the time to visit this spectaular display and help support reading within our community.
