Dream Night at the zoo

Have you ever had the chance to pet an elephant, watch penguins being fed or spent an exclusive night at the zoo while it was closed to the public? Neither have I until tonight.

Our Dream Night at the zoo (hosted by the Rosmand Gifford Zoo) was a spectacular evening for families who have a loved one with a disability to spend quality time with the animals in a sensory friendly environment. Special demonstrations, exhibits, and fun activities were planned for all, including dinner and snacks (glutten free as well!).

This staff and volunteers at tonight's event did a marvelous job and despite the mild rain, there was a huge smile on everyone's face. My favorite part of the night? Nearly getting eaten by a tiger...but that's a story for another day!

Local authors share their work

A big thank you goes to the Mexico Public Library for hosting a local author's night! Lisa M. Buske, Alyshia Hull, and myself all had an opportunity to share our work to the public.

Lisa brought her two books- When The Waves Subside and Where's Heidi. Both these stories about finding hope in the wake of sadness.

Alyshia shared her novel A Thousand Miles. At only 15 years old, this brave young girl took to writing about her 8th grade year which at first she feared, then found what she feared the most was the though of it ending.

My books Sometimes The Wind Blows Sideways: Our Lives with a Special Needs Child and Breaking The Silence (A.L. Daniels) were also availble for sale.

It was a wonderful night for the community to come together and celebrate the success of local writers and those who love to read. I look forward to meeting everyone again soon.

Parents of Special Children, a not-for-profit organization in Oswego County that services families raising children with special needs, is hosting it's first annual "Aim High" event for the community. The free event will feature networking opportunities, presentations, information on services available to families, refreshments, and inspiring stories from people who are currently involved with the agency.

I'll give you a hint of who one of the speakers for that evening will be....ME !

A Busy Weekend For Worthy Causes

5/15/2011

To say that I was busy this weekend would be an understatement.  My calendar was packed with opportunities to visit with friends and help some worthy causes along the way.  I came away completely exhausted, yet satisified knowing that I had contributed in helping others.

Friday night I got to go to a purse party at Lisa's house.  What is a purse party you ask?  Well let's just say that it a little slice of heaven for those women who loves bags and accessories. After browsing around for a while I ended up getting a new laptop bag that conviently happened to match my purse.  I figured that I needed soemthing a little more safisticated to carry around with me than my daughter's pink tote that is embellished with hearts. Lisa felt that it was a good choice because I would require something nice for when I go to speaking engagements.  I like her thinking!

On Saturday I worked the Brianna Bowl III fundraiser at the bowling alley. One of my oldest friends holds this annual fundraiser in her daughters honor and all of the proceeds go to the Austism Task Force. They were able to raise $2,077 dollars which will provide 4 college scholarships to help autistic children continue with their education.  Way to go!!!!

Sunday was the Parent's Of Special Children Jamboree and I couldn't resist offering to help work this as well. This parent driven originization provides respite for families who have children with all sorts of disabilities. Each year they hold this event to raise money to put towards the allocation money that each family receives.  The event consists of a chicken BBQ, a live band, activities for the kids, and of course raffles/prizes.  My daughter and I supervised an art & craft activity there and she was very excited to win a prize after playing some of the games.  If you would like more information on this originization there is a link to their homepage under my "links" tab above.

I have the privilege of being able to shape the minds and lives of children who are battling disabilities.  It can be very trying at times, but more often than not it is very rewarding.  As a mother of a child with a disability, I know the struggles that they go through on a daily basis.  This allows me to have a little more compassion for the people that I work with.
